Jordan Green Glow 4s

Green Glow Air Jordan 4 retro Grey, white, black, green glow

Green Glow Jordan 4s are only a few years old, which is not long given the almost thirty year history of the Air Jordan IV. Despite being the new kid on the block, the Jordan 4 Green Glow is one of the most popular Retro IVs on the resale market. Dark grey Nubuck leather and the iconic wavy grey toe, combined with a Green Glow outsole and eyelet tabs is a classic look that people will still want to wear in twenty years time. A large white Jumpman logo on the padded tongue and large Green Glow Jumpmans on the heel sections makes it clear that this is a Jordan shoe.

On its debut in 1989, the Jordan 4 had four OG colorways; White Cement, Military Blue, Fire Red, and Bred. After a gap of ten years, the brand decided to retro the Jordan 4s. 1999 saw the return of the original cement colorways in addition to the Retro + concept.

Release date

In the years that followed, there were a long list of re-releases of original colorways, newer colorways, lasered versions, mashups and many others. It took 24 years until the dark grey and teal Green Glow 4s appeared in 2013. The exact release date was 8/17/13. It was the second non OG colorway to be released that year for the Jordan Retro 4s.

The other retro 4 colorways that arrived on the market at the same time as the dark grey/cement grey/black/green glow colorway were the “Toro Bravo,” “Thunder,” and “Fear”. The previous year Jordan had released retro versions of the OG colorways so it was time for some new colorways.

Unfortunately the authentic Green Glows don’t actually glow in the dark or under a blacklight. Any pictures you’ve seen online of glow in the dark Green Glow 4s are customs. You can buy Green Glow 4 customs online at eBay. A few coats of glow in the dark paint really turn this shoe into something special. A year later a completely glow in the dark Jordan was released, the Air Jordan 4Lab1 “Glow”, so it was a shame that the same effect couldn’t have been applied to this shoe.

Buy Green Glow 4s

Green Glows are for sale on eBay where there is currently a steady supply. The last restock in stores was in April 2014. Prices vary a lot but anything around $150 is a fair price. Given that the original retail price was $160 and that it has been two years since they’ve been in stores, this is a good deal. On the higher end of the scale, some Green Glow Retros have been selling for almost $300.

If you’re very lucky you can find a pair of Green Glow Retro 4s for under $100. However, buyer beware, not all sneakers are authentic and if you are getting a price that seems too good to be true then it might be.

The popularity of the Jordan Green Glow Retro 4 led to a number of other sneaker lines taking on the colorway. Green glow colorways can be found for the Kobe XI Elite Low, Nike Air Jordan Retro One ’89, Nike Jordan Reveal Jumpman, Nike SB Dunk Low, Air Jordan Son of Mars Low, Nike Hyperdunk 2013, Nike Roshe Run, Jordan Phase 23 II, and Nike Zoom Soldier VII, to name but a few.

GS

Green Glow GS sizes were released and can still be found on eBay. The grade school sneakers are for sale for cheaper than adult sizes at about $120. The good news is the cheap price but the bad news is the limited availability. Youth sizes for IV Glows are in relatively low supply.

Real vs. fake

There are of course fake versions of this shoe for sale online but in general it’s not a huge problem. A good rule of thumb is the price is very cheap then it’s probably too good to be true.

Here’s how to know if you have legit IV Glows:

  • The green color on the inside of the tongue extends over the edge slightly.
  • The inside of the air bubble should be slightly yellow.
  • The material should feel very smooth because authentic IVs use Nubuck leather.
  • The bottom bar of the mesh grid should be exactly parallel with the leather below. To achieve this the mesh needs to be slanting downwards. This feature alone is a very good way of spotting fake IVs.
  • Compare the laces tabs with pictures of real IVs. The shape can be significantly different in fakes.

You can also check the thickness of the tongue and compare it with Jordans you know are authentic. If you have real Jordan IVs to compare with then also check the height of the Nubuck leather on the heel section relative to the Jumpman.

T-shirt

No official matching apparel was released for this retro IV colorway but there are some unofficial tshirts for sale that have been made to match. You can buy them eBay.

History of the Jordan IV

Contemplating the fourth edition of the Jordan signature series, legendary designer Tinker Hatfield wanted to focus more on performance this time around. At the same time he wanted to respected the aesthetic of previous models, for this reason the Jordan 4 carried forward the same mid-cut and sculpted midsole of the AJ 3. Other features adopted from the AJ 3s were the collar, visible air unit, and padded tongue. New features included high quality Nubuck leather and mesh side panels. Plastic hardware was added along the sides for a more cutting edge look. The Jumpman logo on the tongue was also updated to include the term “Flight”. Customizable eyelet section were also something that hadn’t been seen before.

Michael Jordan’s stellar performances while wearing Jordan 4s helped the sneaker rapidly gain popularity. During the 1988-1989 NBA season MJ achieved 32.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game. Most notably during the year he made 15 triple doubles, rang up ten in eleven games with a continuous seven and was rated the best all round player in the NBA leading forward the Bulls to their first ever Eastern Conference finals.

Jordan 4s successfully captured the public’s imagination and the shoes stormed the market. Huge volumes of sales made it one of the most successful sneakers of the year.

Features

The most innovative feature of the Jordan IV was the ability to lace the shoe in eighteen different patterns. This was possible as a result of the four plastic eyelet sections which were placed either side on the top and bottom of the laces. Each eyelet section had nine eyelets, allowing for unique lacing patterns that had never before been seen. The different lacing patterns were embraced by basketball players who found certain patterns improved performance but also by sneakerheads who were able to express their creativity.

The features that make the Jordan 4s most recognizable include the lightweight netting on the side panels, the plastic wings, the four 9 hole eyelet tabs, and visible Max Air bubble.

Other highlights of the sneaker are; the full length midsole, an enhanced ankle, the well designed wings providing fantastic forefoot support, and the cushioning on the heel provided by the Air Unit.

On the court

When Michael Jordan made his way in defense of the Cavaliers and delivered what has come to be known as ‘The Shot’, he turned the game in favor of the Bulls and paved the way for the team to reach the next round. Those who had watched his feet during ‘The Shot’ could spot the Air Jordan 4.

Off the court

Chicago’s assistant coach Phil Jackson rocked IV Jordans during the offseason games.

Most notably, in Spike Lee’s film Do the Right Thing, Mookie had the Air Jordan 4 “White Cement” on his feet.

Some of the celebrities that have been spotted wearing the Green Glows include; DJ Khaled, Chris Paul, Nick Young, Victor Cruz, and Fat Joe.
